The Board of Trustees hopes that the new president will be able to take office in January of 2010. However, if it is impossible for the new president to leave his or her former job in the middle of the year, Hurd explained that he was confident President John R. Brazil would be willing to stay for an extra semester in which case the new president would take office in June.
Students may or may not hear about the final candidates for their University President in the coming months, depending on whether the applicants are willing to declare themselves. Hurd explained that it is often the case that candidates will choose not to declare themselves because they have a good job and might not want to make it known they are planning to leave.
Hurd said that the Presidential Search Committee does not want to end up with less-qualified candidates by requiring candidates to expose that they are applying.
"The most important thing for students to do is to participate in the upcoming forum," Hurd said. "We would like to hear from a broad spectrum of students."
On Thursday, April 30 the Presidential Search Committee will hold an open forum that will allow students, faculty and staff to voice their opinion about the issues that they would want a new president of the University to address.
