Debuting this season, the Club Ultimate Team traveled to Texas A&M University to take part in the sectional tournament for the state of Texas. The top few teams of this tournament are to travel to Regionals and then Finals. During the weekend long tournament, the Trinity team finished 2-4 and came in a tie for 12th place.
Earlier this semester, current team captain Nick Polito, junior, received permission from Jacob Tingle to go ahead and form a Club Ultimate Team. Since then, Polito has done a wonderful job of running the team. They currently practice every Tuesday and Thursday night on the intramural field. At first, the team only played University of Texas-San Antonio's Ultimate team at Trinity.
Competing in the Texas A&M tournament allowed the men to play some new teams as well as familiarize themselves with the level of play expected at a sectional tournament. Although the team lost four games, it barely lost games 13-12, 11-10 and 11-7. The team's other loss came against the University of North Texas, which finished in second place in the tournament. They were able to defeat UTSA and Texas Permian-Basin.
Polito was very happy with the way the team played, especially considering the time frame in which the team has been practicing.
"We played extremely well during the tournament, especially since we have only been practicing for three months," Polito commented. "Three of our losses we could have easily won, and we looked good in our wins."
What was even more surprising to Polito was what other teams were saying about Trinity.
"We kept hearing comments about how we would be a team to be reckoned with in the future, and that felt great," Polito stated. "To hear this from teams who have been playing for years definitely was encouraging, and we look forward to building on this year's results."
The experience at this tournament was second to none other, and co-captain Bryce Harlow, sophomore, feels their play bodes well for future teams.
"We learned a lot playing at this tournament and we have some things that we can work on now," Harlow stated.
Even though the next sectional tournament is not until next spring, the team has plenty of opportunities to play in the fall.
"We are going to still practice hard for the next tournament," Polito stated, "but we also will play in Ultimate Players Association (UPA) club teams to further our development as a team."
