Editorial: Den controversy an opportunity
Issue date: 2/5/10 Section: Opinion
For the most part, people seemed either in support of the bar or they were relatively apathetic. In fact, our photographer had to deliberately seek out people who were not in favor of the bar to diversify our answers. None of the people we asked were in support of a multicultural center. It did get us thinking though. What do students really think? It seems like the only students that have been vocal about either side have been Sidra Qureshi, Michael Tully and a couple of students passionate enough to write a letter to the editor.
In our effort to continue the conversation on campus, we have decided to conduct a more formal survey. This time it will be a bit more methodic than our Sidewalk Symposium. What it will do is allow everyone who feels passionately about this debate to log onto Trinitonian.com and respond to our simple poll question, "What would you like the Tigers' Den space to be?" Choose between a "multicultural center," a "student-run bar" or, if neither choice appeals to you, you can choose "other."
There you go Trinity. We've given you a way to be a part of the discussion, a way to let the Trinity community know what you want. Sure it won't be a completely accurate depiction of what all students think, but it's a start. With the exception of a handful of involved students, we have yet to see much other dialogue on the topic. We can only hope that students will take action to support the choice they believe in rather than apathetically sit by on this issue. It might not be the most important thing we've ever debated, but it's certainly one over which we have a good deal of control - if we're willing to take it.
