"In 'Milk,' I thought it had a nice balance of the politics but also the personal story line," said Patrick Keating, assistant professor of communications and chair for the film studies minor. "It got it just right. We're interested in him as a political figure and what he stands for, but we're also interested in him as a human being."

Black is also a writer and producer for "Big Love," an HBO series featuring a suburban Mormon family who practices polygamy.

"The show's very rich-there are several important characters that all have an interesting complexity," Keating said. "No one dominates the power struggles. It's all about the little details of their lives."

Black is currently working on creating a film of the Tom Wolfe book "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test," which will be directed by "Milk" director Gus Van Sant.

"Van Sant," according to Keating, "has a little bit of indie cinema roots but is still able to reach a broader audience."

Black will be arriving to campus on Monday afternoon to film an interview with Tiger TV and have an open forum with students at 4 p.m. The forum is open to all students. At 7:30 p.m., Black will be lecturing in Laurie Auditorium, an event that is free and open to the public. Black is also scheduled to have dinner with some faculty members in a more personal atmosphere.

"'Milk' was such an important part of the LGBT rights movement and the screenwriter is so young, not much older than Trinity students, not to mention [that] he spent his childhood in San Antonio-it made sense to bring him back," said Richard Reams, associate director of Counseling Services.

Planning for the event began late last spring when Reams initiated the idea to bring Black to campus, and the idea was made realistic by funding from the Department of Communications.

For students wishing to view "Milk" before or after Black's lecture, Reams noted that the film will be screened on Tiger TV next week.
