"Honor Parking" doomed to failure. Let's just park there.

When you came back to campus this semester, you may have noticed that a number of areas that were previously no parking zones were given a new paint job. These spaces have now been dubbed "Honor Parking" spaces.

This is great news … I think. Actually, I had no idea if this was great news because I had no idea what "Honor Parking" really was. So, I did some in depth research to find out.

Now, since as a Trinitonian columnist, I make a salary that compels hobos to give me donations, the majority of my "in depth researching" basically consists of me sitting in a chair wondering about what Honor Parking could be … and which Jersey Shore character I would be if I were Italian (totally Pauly D, btw).

Could they be parking spots for honor students? If so, is that really fair? Why should the bookworms get all the love? If anything, the dumb students should get the parking. They're the ones paying Trinity extra money for that sixth or seventh year of college. I say they've earned their own parking spot by then.

My research was complete. In other words, I had no other ideas as to what Honor Parking could be. Unfortunately, this left me far short of my column's word quota, so I had to actually go to the trouble of typing "honor parking" into my T-mail search. (Dear Editor: For searching, I should get at least $10.25 for this week's work).

In my search, I found a couple of e-mails that help explain the new spaces. According to the e-mails, it turns out that Honor Parking is "for quick drop-offs and pick-ups" and that "security will not patrol these spots." (Dear Editor: Quotes = $11.00).

Apparently, it's been in the works for some time, as now-alumnus Nick Shockey proposed it back in 2008.

(SIDE NOTE: 2008? Seriously? It took over an entire year to paint three parking spaces?)

Now I'm not saying that Honor Parking won't work, nor am I saying that people won't follow these rules (I sure am thinking it though), but there are sure a whole lot of people doing "quick drop-offs and pick-ups" at two in the morning when I'm looking for parking spots.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to downplay Mr. Shockey's idea whatsoever. I respect his idea (and his keen ability to wear polo shirts with everything when he was here at Trinity). I just think that it would make a hell of a lot more sense to just stop masquerading as if this is working. Let's just make the dorm Honor Parking spots as actual parking spots (they essentially are anyways). Or we can assign DCS officers equipped with stopwatches at each spot. You know, whichever you think is a more efficient use of resources.

We all know that we need as many parking spots as possible on this campus. I found two potential ones, and I am proposing that we make them actual parking spots. Hopefully in about a year and a half we'll be able to make that happen.
