A unanimous decision made Thursday morning by the Board of Trustees concluded that the phrase "in the year of Our Lord" will remain on Trinity diplomas. The decision, presented in the form of a resolution, was the product of the Board's first impromptu meeting in memory.
The statement also said the University supports "a campus environment that fosters respect for differing opinions, including differences in religious be-liefs and practices."
Alumni were cited as one of the primary reasons for the Board's decision. According to President Dennis Ahlburg, the Alumni Board, which contacted the alumni about the issue, met with staunch disapproval.
"We got hundreds and hundreds of letters and e-mails," Ahlburg said. "A quarter to a third were from alums, and there were hundreds who said they didn't want the wording changed. There were two out of hundreds who did want it changed. So, overwhelmingly, the alumni supported the current wording. We have to remember that Trinity is not just the current students, but also our many alumni."
Additionally, the Board spoke to tradition and the need to stay true to the University's roots.
Bob McClane, class of 1962 and board member since 1990, commented on the mission of the University, stating, "The resolution the Board passed this morning is very consistent with (the original goals of the University). Almost any other finding would have almost been inappropriate."
The board was compelled to call an impromptu meeting on the issue, according to Ahlburg, after national media coverage incited derogatory comments towards students spearheading the change.
"Unfortunately a lot of people with no connection whatsoever to Trinity decided to express their views, and a lot of those views were highly insulting and absolutely counter to everything that Trinity stands for, and unfortunately a lot of that animosity was directed at some of our students for expressing their point of view in a very professional and very respectful way," Ahlburg said.
